Kumartuli the Hub of Durga Idols

Kumartuli Durga Idol Workshop

Kumartuli, the artisan's place is located near Shobhabazar which is the nearest metro station. The best time to visit this place is during Mahalaya. But since the centre gets the order from many parts of the country and abroad they had to finish painting the idol much earlier.

Every time I walked pass through Kumartuli Sarbojonina and take the narrow lane to reach Kumartuli Park and seeing the preparation of Lakshmi idol created an interest on my mind to visit the Kumartuli workshop and see the making of the idols but was not able to do it until now.

One day, which was a month before Puja I decided to take a visit to this artisans hub. As I entered the 1st lane and watched the idol-making I took out my camera and started clicking photos.

It's pretty certain that one would take pictures of those lovely idols in making but in order to do that one has to pay Rs 10 to two groups at least that's what I had to do. They will give you a day's pass carrying which you can travel around the area and click pictures without being worried much. They have another pass of Rs 50 which allows you to come to Kumartuli anytime and take pictures.

You can find all kind of idols traditional or themed, small or large or very large.

The artists get very busy during as the Puja gets closer. They worked day and night in their workshop which has minimum light. Here you can see artists mixing clay, straw, ropes giving it a shape and finally the colour to create the image of God so lively. The idol is then taken away through this narrow lane into the Puja pandals. So any photography lover visiting Kolkata should visit it.
